half-tracks

Wheels and treads

Half-tracks are military vehicles with conventional wheels at the front and continuous tracks at the rear, combining a truck's steering with a tank's traction over rough terrain.

They saw widespread use during World War II for transporting troops and towing artillery.

The design offered a compromise between the mobility of wheeled vehicles and the cross-country capability of fully tracked ones.
