half-halt

Brief rein signal

A half-halt is a subtle, momentary signal from rider to horse—a brief check through seat, legs, and hands that rebalances the horse without bringing it to a full stop.

It prepares the horse for a transition, sharpens attention, or shifts weight to the hindquarters: She used a series of half-halts before the collected canter.

The term is fundamental in dressage.
