sea gypsy
Maritime nomadic people
Sea gypsy refers to various ethnic groups in Southeast Asia who traditionally live on boats or in stilt houses over water, subsisting primarily through fishing and diving.
The Moken of Thailand and Myanmar and the Bajau of the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia are the best-known examples.
The term romanticizes a nomadic maritime lifestyle but can be considered patronizing.
More broadly, sea gypsy describes anyone who lives an itinerant life on the water: He sold everything and became a sea gypsy, sailing from port to port.
