parquet floor
Inlaid wood surface
A parquet floor is made of small wood pieces arranged in geometric patterns—herringbone, chevron, or basket weave being common designs.
The technique creates decorative surfaces more visually interesting than standard plank flooring: The old ballroom had an elaborate parquet floor.
Parquet floors appear in formal spaces and older buildings, requiring more skill to install and maintain than ordinary hardwood.
