glissading

Controlled mountain slide

Glissading is sliding down a steep snow slope in a controlled manner, typically in a standing or sitting position.

It's a mountaineering technique for rapid descent: We spent the afternoon glissading down the glacier.

The word comes from French for gliding, related to glissade in ballet—a smooth sliding step.
