gift of tongues

Miraculous language ability

Gift of tongues is a religious phenomenon in which a person speaks in a language unknown to them, understood as a divine gift from the Holy Spirit.

In Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity, it often manifests as ecstatic utterance—sounds that don't correspond to any known language, also called glossolalia.

Some traditions interpret the gift as miraculously speaking actual foreign languages: At Pentecost, the apostles received the gift of tongues and preached to people of many nations.
