front benches

Senior legislators' seats

Front benches are the seats in the British House of Commons occupied by senior government ministers and opposition leaders, who sit facing each other across the chamber.

By extension, the term refers to these senior politicians themselves: The front benches clashed over the budget.

Those not in leadership sit on the back benches.
