freshie

First-year student slang

A freshie is a newcomer or beginner—someone fresh to a situation.

In school slang, it's a freshman: The freshies looked lost on their first day.

In surfing and swimming, a freshie is a freshwater crocodile (as opposed to the more dangerous saltwater "saltie") or simply fresh water itself.

In some Commonwealth countries, freshie refers to a recent immigrant who hasn't yet assimilated.
