Croft
Small tenant farm
A croft is a small agricultural holding, typically found in Scotland, where the land is worked by tenant farmers under a unique legal framework.
Crofts are often associated with subsistence farming and mixed-use practices, combining livestock grazing with small-scale crop cultivation.
Historically, crofting emerged as a response to the Highland Clearances, when displaced communities were resettled on marginal lands.
Crofting law protects tenants’ rights and limits the size of crofts, which are usually under 50 acres.
The croft was dotted with sheep and bordered by dry-stone walls.
