free thinker

Rejects received wisdom

A free thinker forms opinions independently, relying on reason and evidence rather than accepting religious doctrine, tradition, or established authority.

The term emerged from Enlightenment-era challenges to church orthodoxy but now applies more broadly: She was raised Catholic but became a free thinker in college.

Often carries connotations of skepticism toward received wisdom.
