frameshift mutation
Genetic sequence derailment
A frameshift mutation is a genetic alteration where nucleotides are inserted or deleted in numbers not divisible by three, throwing off the reading frame of the entire gene sequence that follows.
Since DNA is read in three-letter codons, adding or removing one or two nucleotides scrambles every subsequent codon, usually producing a nonfunctional protein.
The disease was traced to a frameshift mutation in a single gene.
