fortified town
Defended urban center
A fortified town is a settlement protected by defensive structures—walls, ramparts, moats, or strongholds.
The term usually refers to medieval or early modern communities built to withstand siege: The fortified town held out for three months against the invading army.
Some fortified towns preserve their original walls as historical landmarks.
