format wars
Standard supremacy contests
Format wars are competitions between incompatible technical standards vying for market dominance.

Format wars create risk for consumers who may invest in the losing standard: I'm waiting out the format war before buying.
The term extends to any clash between rival systems—charging cables, file types, streaming platforms.
