foremother
Woman who preceded
A foremother is a female ancestor, the counterpart to forefather.
The term often appears in discussions of women's history, honoring women who came before: We owe our foremothers for the rights we enjoy today.
Like forefather, it can refer to founders or pioneers of a tradition rather than literal ancestors.
