great-grandmothers

Parents' grandparents' mothers

Great-grandmothers is the plural of great-grandmother—the mother of one's grandmother or grandfather.

The term marks a specific generational distance: three steps back from oneself.

Both of my great-grandmothers immigrated from Poland.

The prefix great- adds one generation beyond grandparent, and can be stacked: great-great-grandmother goes back four generations.
