great-grandmother

Grandparent's own mother

A great-grandmother is the mother of one's grandmother or grandfather—three generations back.

The term follows the pattern of adding "great-" for each generation beyond grandparent: a great-great-grandmother is four generations back.

My great-grandmother emigrated from Poland in 1910.
