floating gardens
Water-based crop beds
Floating gardens are agricultural systems where crops grow on buoyant platforms in lakes, rivers, or flooded areas.
Some are anchored rafts of vegetation and soil; others rest on natural mats of decomposing plants.
The chinampas of Mexico and the gardens of Inle Lake in Myanmar are famous examples.
The technique allows farming in places where dry land is scarce or seasonally submerged.
