flatirons

Old cloth pressers

Flatirons are dramatic, slanted rock formations that rise at steep angles from the ground, resembling old-fashioned flat irons used for pressing clothes.

The term is most associated with the iconic sandstone slabs outside Boulder, Colorado: We hiked to the base of the Flatirons at sunrise.

Lowercase flatiron can also mean a clothes iron with a flat metal base, heated on a stove—the predecessor to electric irons.
