Chautauqua

Tent-lecture tradition

Chautauqua was a late 19th and early 20th century American adult education movement featuring traveling programs of lectures, concerts, and entertainment.

Named after Chautauqua Lake in New York where it originated, the movement brought culture to rural communities through tent shows and summer assemblies.

The word now evokes that era's earnest pursuit of self-improvement: The town's old chautauqua grounds are now a park.
