fixed stars

Unchanging celestial points

Fixed stars are stars that appear motionless relative to each other, forming the unchanging backdrop of constellations against which planets visibly wander.

The term dates from ancient astronomy, when observers distinguished these "fixed" points of light from the planets (Greek for "wanderers").

Though we now know all stars move, the term persists in astrology and historical contexts: The fixed stars were thought to occupy the outermost celestial sphere.
