feudal barons

Land-holding nobles

Feudal barons were nobles who held land directly from a king or higher lord in exchange for military service and loyalty.

They occupied the middle tier of medieval European hierarchy—powerful enough to command their own knights and peasants, but subordinate to the crown.

The feudal barons of England forced King John to sign the Magna Carta.

The term now appears mostly in historical contexts or as a metaphor for powerful figures who control territory or resources: tech barons, media barons.
