court leet

Local feudal assembly

A court leet was a local court in medieval and early modern England that handled minor offenses and administrative matters within a manor or hundred.

The lord of the manor or his steward presided, and attendance was typically required of all adult male residents.

These courts enforced petty regulations, appointed local officials, and maintained order in matters too small for royal courts.

Though largely obsolete by the 19th century, a few survive as ceremonial institutions.
