fancy dress

Masquerade ball attire

Fancy dress in British English refers to costumes worn for parties or events where guests dress as characters, historical figures, or themes: a fancy dress party, She went in fancy dress as Cleopatra.

The American equivalent is simply "costume." In American usage, fancy dress more often means formal attire—evening gowns and tuxedos—nearly the opposite meaning.
