fairy circles
Desert bare patches
Fairy circles are mysterious circular patches of barren ground surrounded by rings of vegetation, found in arid grasslands of Namibia and Australia.
Folk tradition attributed them to dancing fairies or supernatural activity.
Scientists debate whether termites, self-organizing plant competition for water, or both explain the phenomenon.
Separately, fairy circles are rings of mushrooms appearing in lawns and meadows—also called fairy rings—where underground fungal networks fruit at their expanding edges.
