fag

Slang for cigarette

Two different words have settled on the spelling fag.

In British English, a fag is a cigarette, and to fag means to work hard until exhausted; in the boarding school tradition, a fag was a younger student performing menial tasks for an older one.

In American English, fag is a slur for a gay man, shortened from faggot.

The word is offensive and often wounding, though some gay men use it among themselves: I'm a fag like Oscar Wilde, like James Baldwin.
