externalism

Thoughts need environment

Externalism is a philosophical position holding that mental states or knowledge depend partly on factors outside the mind.

In philosophy of mind, it claims that the meaning of thoughts is determined not just by what's in the head but by the external environment.

In epistemology, externalism holds that justification for beliefs can come from reliable processes the believer isn't aware of: Externalism allows that you can know something without knowing how you know it.
