offramp
Freeway exit lane
An offramp is a road that allows vehicles to exit a highway or freeway: Take the next offramp for downtown.
Figuratively, an offramp is any way to exit a difficult situation gracefully—politicians speak of giving adversaries an offramp to de-escalate conflict: The negotiators offered him an offramp to save face.
Also spelled off-ramp.
