exit fee

Cost of leaving

An exit fee is a charge for leaving an agreement early—canceling a contract, withdrawing from an investment, or ending a membership before its term expires.

The fee discourages premature departure and compensates the other party for lost revenue: The cell phone contract included a $200 exit fee.

Also called an early termination fee.
