exclaves

Separated sovereign fragments

Exclaves are portions of a country or territory physically separated from the main body and surrounded by foreign territory.

Alaska is a U.S. exclave, separated from the contiguous states by Canada.

The term contrasts with enclave, which describes the same territory from the perspective of what surrounds it: Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave but a European enclave.

The treaty created several exclaves along the border.
