strike out
Fail at bat
Strike out means to delete or cross off something written, drawing a line through it to indicate removal.
In baseball, strike out describes when a batter fails to hit after three strikes, ending their turn at bat; a pitcher can also strike out a batter by throwing three strikes.
Figuratively, if you strike out, you fail at an attempt: I struck out trying to get her number.
To strike out on your own means to begin an independent venture or journey.
