excavation site
Where archaeologists work
An excavation site is a location where systematic digging is underway, typically for archaeological or paleontological research.
The term emphasizes organized, scientific removal of earth to uncover artifacts, fossils, or structural remains: The excavation site revealed pottery fragments from the Bronze Age.
Construction projects also have excavation sites, though these are more often called simply "sites" or "digs."
