wilderness area
Land without development
A wilderness area is land officially protected from development and managed to preserve its natural condition.
In the United States, the term has specific legal meaning under the Wilderness Act of 1964, designating federal lands where roads, buildings, and motorized vehicles are prohibited: We hiked into the wilderness area for three days.
The designation aims to keep land untrammeled by human activity.
