ex-Muslim

Left the faith

An ex-Muslim is a person who was raised Muslim or converted to Islam but has since left the faith—whether becoming atheist, agnostic, or adopting another religion.

The term carries political weight in debates about apostasy, religious freedom, and Islam's relationship to secular society: Ex-Muslim activists face threats in countries where apostasy is criminalized.

Some use the label as an identity marker, particularly in online communities.
