entrapping

Luring into capture

Entrapping is the act of catching someone in a trap, whether literal or figurative.

Most often it describes luring someone into a compromising situation: The detective was accused of entrapping suspects by offering them drugs.

In legal contexts, entrapment occurs when law enforcement induces someone to commit a crime they wouldn't otherwise have committed.

More loosely, anything that snares or confines entraps: vines entrapping the fence, entrapping someone in a bad marriage.
