shigellosis

Gut bacterial infection

Shigellosis is a bacterial infection of the intestines caused by Shigella bacteria, typically contracted through contaminated food or water or through person-to-person contact.

Symptoms include diarrhea (often bloody), fever, and stomach cramps, usually appearing one to two days after exposure.

The infection spreads easily in settings with poor sanitation or close contact, such as daycare centers.

Most cases resolve within a week, though severe infections may require antibiotics.
