Empaths are people who believe they absorb or directly feel the emotions of others, beyond ordinary empathy.
The term comes from science fiction but has been adopted by self-help and spiritual communities to describe those who consider themselves unusually sensitive to emotional atmospheres: As an empath, I find crowds exhausting.
Skeptics regard the concept as pseudoscientific, noting that everyone experiences some emotional contagion.
