cognitive empathy

Perspective-taking skill

Cognitive empathy is the ability to understand another person's perspective or mental state without necessarily feeling what they feel.

It's intellectual rather than emotional—recognizing that someone is sad and why, even if you don't share their sadness.

A good negotiator uses cognitive empathy to anticipate the other side's concerns.

Distinguished from affective empathy, which involves actually sharing another's emotions.
