empathizing

Sharing another's feelings

Empathizing is the act of understanding or sharing another person's feelings—putting yourself in their position emotionally.

It differs from sympathizing, which maintains more distance: you can sympathize with someone's loss without feeling their grief yourself.

She spent the afternoon empathizing with her friend's frustration.

Also spelled empathising in British English.
