ear defender

Noise-blocking headgear

Ear defenders are protective coverings worn over the ears to reduce exposure to loud noise.

The term is more common in British than American English, where earplugs or ear protection predominate.

They resemble headphones but block rather than transmit sound: Construction workers must wear ear defenders on site.
