duck, duck, goose

Circle tapping game

Duck, duck, goose is a children's chasing game where players sit in a circle while one child walks around tapping heads, saying "duck" for each until choosing someone as "goose"—who must then chase the tapper around the circle.

The phrase sometimes describes any selection process where most are passed over until someone is suddenly singled out: It felt like duck, duck, goose—everyone relaxed until they got picked.
