musical chairs
Circling for seats
Musical chairs is a children's game where players walk around a circle of chairs while music plays, then scramble to sit when it stops—with one fewer chair than players, so someone is eliminated each round.
The term extends to any situation involving competitive reshuffling of limited positions: The cabinet reshuffle was a game of musical chairs among the president's allies.
