driving wheel

Power-transmitting wheel

A driving wheel is a wheel that transmits power or motion to other parts of a mechanism.

On a locomotive, the driving wheels are the large wheels connected to the pistons that propel the engine along the tracks, as distinguished from the smaller carrying wheels.

The term extends to any wheel in machinery that receives power directly and drives the system, such as the main wheel of a mill or the powered wheels of a vehicle.
