disincorporated

Lost corporate status

Disincorporated describes a municipality—typically a small town or village—that has dissolved its local government and reverted to unincorporated status within a county or township.

Towns disincorporate when they can no longer afford to provide services or maintain infrastructure: The struggling mining town was disincorporated in 1987.

The term also applies to corporations that have been legally dissolved.
