disaster area

Zone of destruction

A disaster area is a region severely damaged by natural catastrophe or emergency—flood, hurricane, earthquake, tornado—often officially designated to receive government aid and relief funds.

Figuratively, any place in terrible disorder qualifies: My son's bedroom is a disaster area.

The phrase can describe situations as well as physical spaces: The project was a disaster area from start to finish.
