dial-up networking
Telephone internet access
Dial-up networking is connecting a computer to the internet or another network through a telephone line and modem.
Before broadband became widespread in the early 2000s, this was how most home users accessed the internet—the modem would audibly dial a phone number and establish a connection at relatively slow speeds.
I remember the screeching sound of dial-up networking every time I wanted to check email.
