danceathons

Prolonged movement contests

Danceathons are endurance competitions where participants dance continuously for extended periods, sometimes days, with the last couple or individual standing declared the winner.

Popular during the Great Depression as entertainment and a way for desperate contestants to win prize money, they often pushed participants to physical collapse.

The format survives in charity fundraisers where dancers collect pledges for hours danced: The sorority's danceathon raised ten thousand dollars for the children's hospital.
