cytotoxins
Deadly cellular agents
Cytotoxins are substances that damage or destroy cells.
The term combines Greek roots meaning "cell" and "poison." These toxins may be produced by bacteria, fungi, plants, or animals as defensive or offensive weapons, or they may be synthetic.
In medicine, cytotoxins are used deliberately in chemotherapy to kill cancer cells: The cytotoxins targeted rapidly dividing tumor cells.
