crossbills

Conifer seed specialists

Crossbills are finches whose upper and lower bill tips cross rather than meet, an adaptation for extracting seeds from conifer cones.

The bird inserts its closed bill between cone scales, then opens it to pry the scales apart and reach the seed.

Several species exist worldwide, each specializing in different cone types: Red crossbills prefer pines; white-winged crossbills favor spruces.
