house finches
Red-headed yard birds
House finches are small North American songbirds with streaked brown plumage, the males showing red coloring on the head and breast.
Originally native to the western United States and Mexico, they spread eastward after pet shop birds were released in New York in the 1940s.
They're now among the most common backyard birds across the continent, often seen at feeders.
