literary periods

Ages of literature

Literary periods are spans of time characterized by distinctive styles, themes, and movements in written works.

Critics and scholars divide literary history into periods—the Renaissance, Romanticism, Modernism—to organize and compare texts sharing cultural contexts or aesthetic approaches.

The boundaries are often fuzzy and debated: Is this novel late Victorian or early Modernist?

Period labels help situate works but can oversimplify the messiness of actual literary production.
